Kevin Smith was on the cusp of greatness when his life was cut tragically short in 2002.
The 38-year-old was already a household name in New Zealand and was about to star in a major Hollywood film alongside Bruce Willis when it all ended.
But the star of hit TV shows Xena: Warrior Princess and Hercules was killed in a fall on a movie set in China.
Now two former acting colleagues are paying tribute to their old mate and raising money for the family he left behind.
Stuntmen Craig Dunn and Shaughan Campbell have fond memories of their work on set with Kevin.
Much of it took place at the site of a former lion safari park on Redhills Rd in Massey where numerous scenes from Xena and Hercules were shot.
Kevin played Ares, the Greek god of war.
"We would have fights against his character, " Mr Campbell says. "He'd beat us up every week."
Mr Dunn and Mr Campbell have produced a series of t-shirts to commemorate Kevin and their days together on location out west.
The shirts include the words "Old Lion Safari Park film training camp - 1963-Kevin Smith-2002".
"That was where we spent our last days with Kev," Mr Campbell says.
Proceeds will go into a special trust for Kevin's wife Sue and their three sons Oscar, Tyrone and Willard.
Mr Dunn says Kevin was committed to his work and would get up at 5am to train.
He would also make time to talk to anyone on the set, including the extras.
"He was really down to earth," Mr Dunn says.
"He was very level-headed."
The t-shirt memorial project is backed by a number of big names in the film industry, including Hercules star Kevin Sorbo and Xena actor Lucy Lawless.
Actors from Outrageous Fortune, which is filmed in Waitakere, have also offered their support.
"Everyone is on board," Mr Dunn says.
